Why Pulmonologist?

Pulmonology or Respiratory Medicine involves diseases and conditions affecting the lungs and evaluation of patients who present with breathlessness, cough, chest pain, wheezing, chest tightness, snoring, sleepiness etc

TYPES OF RESPIRATORY DISEASES:

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): COPD is a common lung disease that blocks the airflow and makes it difficult to breathe. Damage to the lungs from COPD is very severe. Emphysema and Bronchitis are the two most common COPD conditions. Shortness of breath, wheezing and chronic cough are some of the symptoms of COPD. Since COPD symptoms do not appear till significant lung damage has already been done, most patients living with COPD do not come in for treatment till it reaches a critical point.

Asthma: Asthma is a condition in which a person’s airways become inflamed, narrow and swell and produce extra mucus, which makes it difficult to breathe. Asthma can be minor or it can interfere with daily activities. In some cases, it may lead to a life-threatening attack. Asthma may cause difficulty breathing, chest pain, cough and wheezing. The symptoms may sometimes flare up and can become fatal.

Pulmonary Fibrosis: Pulmonary fibrosis is a lung disease that occurs when lung tissue becomes damaged and scarred. This thickened, stiff tissue makes it more difficult for the lungs to work properly. As pulmonary fibrosis worsens, the patient becomes progressively more short of breath. Pulmonary fibrosis can be caused by many conditions including chronic inflammatory processes (sarcoidosis, Wegener’s granulomatosis), infections and environmental agents (asbestos, silica, exposure to certain gases).

Pneumonia: Pneumonia is a form of acute respiratory infection that affects the lungs. The lungs are made up of small sacs called alveoli, which fill with air when a healthy person breathes. When an individual has pneumonia, the alveoli are filled with pus and fluid, which makes breathing painful and limits oxygen intake. Pneumonia is caused by a number of infectious agents, including viruses, bacteria and fungi. Pneumonia can become fatal if not treated in its early stages.

What are allergies?

The substances that give rise to allergic reactions are allergens. If someone is allergic, their immune system produces an antibody known as immunoglobulin E (IgE). Antibodies are reactive to allergens. The resulting symptoms are an allergenic reaction.

For instance, contact with what is usually a harmless substance like pollen could provoke the reaction of your immune system (your body’s defence system).

What Is an Allergic Reaction?

Some of us sneeze like crazy. Some have hives and watery eyes. But regardless of the response, it comes down to one thing: allergies. While your problem may sound like starting in the nose or eyes, Allergies originate in a wild immune system.

How do doctors diagnose allergic reactions?

Doctors diagnose allergies through three stages:

    How are allergies treated?

Good allergy, therapy is based on your medical history, the results of your allergy tests and the severity of your symptoms.

It can consist of three types of treatment: avoiding allergens, drug options and/or immunotherapy (allergens administered under the tongue).

Below is a shortlist of allergy medications

    Nasal corticosteroids

These are nose sprays: They decrease the swelling. Swelling causes a stuffy, runny and itchy nose. These are the most efficient drugs for nasal allergies.

    Mast cell stabilizers

Mast cell stabilizers interfere with the body's ability to release histamine. It may help with itching, watering eyes or itchy, runny nose.

    Decongestants

Decongestants decrease numbness by narrowing the swollen membranes in the nose.

    Corticosteroid creams

Corticosteroid creams or ointments provide relief from itching and stop the spread of rashes.

    Oral corticosteroids

Oral corticosteroids can be prescribed to decrease swelling and stop serious allergic reactions.
